October 1, 2007 – Carlsbad – As the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation continues its remarkable growth, its impact is resonating throughout the community. With the release of its 2008 grant guidelines, the Foundation will focus on youth education in Carlsbad.

The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation is in its first year of grant making. Each year the chosen grants focus area will change. In the current cycle, the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation will only accept proposals in the field of youth education: including programs and activities that result in improving the educational opportunities for youth in Carlsbad.

The guidelines contain more specific information about applicant eligibility and the selection process that the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation will follow over the next couple of months. Projects must be for youth ages 0-14 and/or in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th. Special consideration will be given to projects that address math, science, technology, art, music, life skills, literacy, and mentoring. To be eligible for a grant from the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, projects for which funding is requested must serve youth in the City of Carlsbad.

Once applications are received, the members of the Carlsbad Community Foundation will vote to decide where the grantmaking dollars go. The deadline for grant submissions is November 12, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. Soon, grant guidelines will be available to view and download at www.EndowCarlsbad.org.

Through the Foundation’s fund building efforts, half of their donations go immediately into grantmaking, producing nearly $50,000 for grants in 2008 alone. The other half of donations is placed in a permanent endowment to support Carlsbad in perpetuity. Thus far, the endowment is also near $50,000.

Hollyce Phillips, founding board member and chair of the Grants Committee stated, “We are privileged to be part of this grant process which is working to address needs in our community. We look forward to receiving applications from local groups and seeing where we can make the greatest impact.”

With granting being focused on youth education this year, Phillips added, “I am excited about the possibilities we can generate in terms of supporting innovative, new programs or helping expand existing, successful programs.” As a Carlsbad resident, she knows how “vital education is to our community. The difference that this Foundation will make, both short and long term, is something of which we can be proud.”

The Foundation’s website, www.endowcarlsbad.org, has information about the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, including the new grant guidelines, a list of current members and information about how to join.

Endow Carlsbad is a community-specific effort to meet the emerging needs of Carlsbad by encouraging and increasing responsible and effective philanthropy by and for the benefit of all who live and give in Carlsbad.

The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation is part of a network of local affiliates of The San Diego Foundation, each serving the unique needs of communities throughout the region. These local affiliates are being formed within the 'Endow Your Community' effort of The San Diego Foundation's region-wide initiative, Endow San Diego. This multi-year initiative informs and inspires San Diegans regarding the benefit of endowment. Endowments are permanent charitable funds with the requirement that the principal is never spent. The balance of these funds is invested, earning income that is then spent to support charitable works in perpetuity.

Communities that have already joined this effort include Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, Oceanside and the residents of 4S Ranch and the surrounding areas.
