July 27 , 2007 - The residents of Carlsbad want to make a difference – the City is going to help them do it. The newly formed Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, received a generous matching grant from the City of Carlsbad that will serve their community exclusively and inspire philanthropy.
The City Council has pledged to match up to $25,000, on a four-to-one match for The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation. The contributions will go towards immediate grantmaking in Carlsbad in addition to half of the matching grant being put into an endowment fund.
Since the launch of The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation, 50 community leaders have joined with an initial contribution of $1,000 per year of membership, and a commitment for five years. Chaired by Knox Williams, the Carlsbad Charitable Foundation already has pledges and contributions totaling $250,000, and a maximum match from the City of $25,000, making over $50,000 available for grantmaking in the first year.
“We are grateful to the City Council for this grant as well as for recognizing the need in Carlsbad for The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation,” states Knox Williams. “This grant, in addition to the work of the volunteers, will help to inspire and encourage more philanthropy in our community. We hope to inspire new members and are excited to engage members in effective grantmaking to benefit Carlsbad.”
Half of the contributions will immediately go into annual grantmaking, while the other half will be placed in a permanent community endowment. Each year, The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation will focus on one cause or issue in Carlsbad, and the members of The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation will vote annually to decide where the grant making dollars go.
The Carlsbad Charitable Foundation is part of Endow Carlsbad, a community-specific initiative to meet the emerging needs of Carlsbad by encouraging and increasing responsible and effective philanthropy. The aim is to build endowments, which will provide support for charitable causes in Carlsbad, enhancing residents’ quality of life now and for generations to come.
